Canary Grill Restaurant

The Canary Grill, 409 Front St. E. hasn't changed much in the 60 or so years since it's been around. It has the authentic charm of a by-gone era and the food is nothing fancy or trendy, but satisfying, greasy spoon fare. Eggs over easy and bottomless cup of coffee kind of place. Many of the folks who work in Toronto's booming film industry are Canary regulars, so you never know who you'll be rubbing shoulders with.

And painted Canary Yellow, to match it's name! I imagine eggs'n'bacon and toast would taste really yummy while sitting on one of those red stools up at the counter, chatting with the regulars and the waitress.

Thank you. This photo and this cafe reminds me to those typical grills the we called "American dream" where there was absolutely nothing to dream but "we" (American Graffiti era) loved so so much to imagine.

I love the coffee in restaurants like the Canary. No Grande-half-decaf-talle-short...just yummy honest trucker java! And the of breakfast Homer drools for...

I worked at 393 Front St. E during the mid 70s. We were truck drivers and usually ate on the road but sometimes we were at the depot when hunger struck. The Canary was the only restaurant within walking distance. I remember the place as filled with cigarette smoke, badly in need of a cleaning, and food that was as grey as the servers. It was a low-end eatery in a low-end end of town. I am surprised it's still there. More surprised that it moved there in the 60s - it seemed much older than 10 years old when I was there. Maybe there was already a restaurant there when Chris Koidis moved his business there? I wonder if they still serve liver & onions?
