Cherry Beach, Toronto

Despite the frigid temperatures last week, this was an awesome if not desolate spot on Toronto's Cherry Beach. Toronto sits on Lake Ontario and has an extensive waterfront. Only thing is, it's neither visable nor accessable to most of Toronto's residents. Which is why you get these haunting, lonely vistas...even in the heat of the summer.

Out for a stroll in Toronto's Distillery neighbourhood, I thought I was seeing triple. There was a sea of Boston Terriers attending their annual gathering (who knew?!) I couldn't get them to hold still and smile for me, but I think I captured the nature of these lovable and tenacious characters. I've owned 2 of them over the years and my heart pines for another one.

Sorry, dear readers. I haven't been posting much these days but I promise to jump right back into it. As for the shot of the long line up outside the LCBO (Liquor Control Board) on Spadina Ave...this photo was taken at 4pm on New Year's Eve.
Unfortunately these poor people neglected to plan ahead. Unlike the rest of the civilized world, here in Ontario, liquor sales are regulated by the province, and only available in government controlled stores. Kinda like the old USSR distribution system.
You can't just walk into any old neighbourhood shop and buy yourelf a bottle. Can't imagine what that might lead to??
Hopefully there was product left on the shelves for these folks. I'm sure they have all learned a very valuable lesson.

Look "who" I discovered early one morning, as I pulled into my parking spot. I don't know how this little fellow got to be sitting on a fire escape just east of the city's downtown core, but our entire staff spent half the morning peeking out an office window to check on him and make sure he would stay safe until the wildlife rescue people arrived. A bit of an unusual site. Several people have commented that owls are signs of some kind. Do any of my readers have knowledge about that?

I stopped caring about the Santa Clause Parade years and years ago. My kids are all grown now and my interests are elsewhere, to say the least, but it was a thrill yesterday, out walking at the end of the day in Toronto's Distillery District, to stumble upon the floats returning to their quarters after the parade. It seemed the larger than life characters with their maniacal smiles would be a bit scary for young children, no?

Raccoon Proof

Like urban dwellers everywhere, Toronto has a major problem with it's raccoon population. Our citizens have to do daily battle to keep the pesky critters from tearing apart garbage bins and composters. The City of Toronto's "green bin" programme, which encourages residents to compost food wastes has many benefits, but you can see the lengths my dear husband had to go to to keep the beasts from gnawing through the plastic to get at our goodies. I'll let you know how our fortifications hold.

My New Best Friend

I would like to introduce you all to "Flash" my new E-Bike!!Flash runs on electricity and can go 60km on a single charge. Great for the environment, and definitley good for attention getting! I have to say, I love the looks I get as I whizz by. Flash is built neither for speed nor for comfort, I'm afraid, but I am very excited to give my car a rest while this beautiful fall weather is still here.

Nuit Blanche

Last Saturday night, all of Toronto was out taking in the festivities of Toronto's 2nd annual Nuit Blanche "a free all-night contemporary art thing" The weather was extremely cooperative as most of the exhibits were outdoors, such as the one pictured above. This event was at the Royal Ontario Museum, just outside the Michael Lee-Chin Crystal (which I've posted about previously), designed by super-star architect Daniel Liebeskind. The striking exterior of the building was used as a screen for projected images, which were combined with a DJ / VJ and contemporary music. It was a great crowd scene, and surely as much fun to watch as to participate.

In Memoriam

The St. James Cathedral and Crematoriam sits on the property adjascent to the St. James Cemetary. Smack in the heart of the city, it is a lovely and peaceful destination for an early fall walk. Especially when the weather is so cooperative. I have no loved ones burried here. I hope to soon post a photo of the Pardes Shalom Cemetary where my dear sister Cathy is burried. It's a bit of a hike, well outside the city, but a very special place to me for remembering.

A Spiritual Moment in Time

On Tuesday, Sept. 18th I attended a recital of Olivier Messiaen's "Quartet for the End of Time" It was the the 1st concert of the season at Toronto's Four Season's Centre for the Arts. This was an especially poignant piece for many reasons. The composer wrote this in a Prisoner of War camp and even in that misery found uplifting comfort in his faith, and transcribed it into an erie yet hopeful score. The quartet performed in the Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre, named after the dynamic visionary director of the Canadian Opera Company, who died suddenly one month ago at age 62. This piece was given extra solemnity as it served as a memorial for this great man. And, dear readers, my darling son Ben was the pianist of this esteemed quartet, standing front and centre in the photograph. An honour for him... and for his listeners.

I spent most of the day Sunday sampling the food at the first ever Picnik at the Brickworks, sponsored in part by the Toronto Slow Food Convivium. The best chefs in town were there offering morsels of their exquisite creations. These are but a few of the many items that were served not on paper plates (God forbid!) but on leaves. I had no idea how to eat some of these concoctions, but trust me...they were amazing. There were also large quantities of Ontario Wines to wash everything down with.

Rubbing Shoulders with Celebs at TIFF

Fun time on Saturday night at the Toronto International Film Festival. I got an invite to a pre-party for the screening of Matt Damon's new film, Running the Sahara. He's one of a growing list of celebrities using his fame to bring awareness to the impoverished regions of the world, and bravo to him. Mr. Damon arrived on the red carpet looking cool and dapper, as befits a superstar, and stayed and mingled with the media and other partiers for a little over an hour. He was very gracious and generous about letting me photograph him, before his wrangler shooed us all away. My general impression is that it must be exhausting to be a celebrity on one of these media junkets. I sincerely wish him lots of luck. The film looks to be very promising.

Not your Garden Variety Mall Rats

Square Foot Exhibit

I recently attented an imaginative art exhibit at the AWOL Galleryon Ossington Avenue in Toronto's West end. There were hundreds of local and international artists who were commissioned to create a piece that was exactly 1 square foot (sorry I don't know how to calculate the metric conversion...anyway, it wouldn't sound nearly as good) The pieces were arranged in a precise grid fashion around the room, and it was fascinating to see the huge range of talent and creativity that this show inspired. Each piece was for sale for a mere $200.Cdn! I walked away with one, that I will pick up at the end of the show and will feature it in an upcoming posting.

Some of the grafitti I see around town just takes my breath away. I would love to know who painted this work of art. I would love to own a piece like this. I happened upon it last weekend on College Street just west of University Ave and stopped dead in my tracks. The colours and subject matter are quite pleasing. And of course the music theme is uber cool! It was painted on a hydro panel cover. Talk about urban beautification!!

On Sunday August 19th, I stumbled upon an event in Toronto's Little Portugal. I'm not sure if it was a religious or cultural festival, but there were 2 marching bands and houses and streets decorated with flags and banners. Very colourful and festive. These dudes seemed to be taking a break from the excitement to watch from the sidelines.

An underachiever of a neighbourhood if there ever was one, Leslieville (AKA Queen Street East) used to be a working class blight on the city but is now an area where art galleries & restaurants are popping up all over the place. Stroll a few blocks and you will see young artsy types mixing with cool moms in cafes and retro furniture shops. Stay tuned for more pics of this hot and emerging quartier

I know, I know...this doesn't jive with the "holier than thou" oatmeal image that I portrayed in my earlier post, but I just wanted show you that there is another side of me. When I've got a chunk of free time on my hands one of my favourite pastimes is to browse the racks of Vintage clothing stores. I'm not successful every time, but once in a while, I do turn up a real treasure. I once found an authenic Hermes scarf, in pristine condition, at Value Village. I have a collection of cashmere coats & sweaters and a few designer gowns that I've been lucky enough to unearth. When I wear them, everyone comments. I'm currently looking for a dress to wear to my friend's daughter's wedding. Didn't turn anything up in this expidition, but I will perservere. However, I'm noticing that now the prices for anything worth having have really skyrocketed.

Somehow, I didn't get the memo about the August 1st breakfast theme, but as it turned out, I happen to have a lovely example of what I eat for breakfast 360 days a year. Good old fashioned home cooked oatmeal with some fruit, nuts and yogurt. And my colon loves me for it!

Eco Friendly

Here is a creative use for a gas guzzling wreck of a car... other than the usual solution of plowing it into a landfill. The Community Vehicular Reclaimation Project turned this one into a garden. Instead of emitting greenhouse gasses, this is actually helping restore the carbon balance. Also, note the liscence plate!

Drum Circle

Yesterday I visited Kensington Market, where it has been a tradition that all Summer long, the streets are closed off to automobile traffic on Sundays (only). Shame the powers that be couldn't see fit to keep the cars away every day, all year round. If you've ever driven through the warren of narrow streets in Kensington Market, I'm sure you've wondered why you even bothered.
Anyway, there were all kinds of events, demonstrations and street performers out in fine form, such as this drum circle pictured above. Anyone who could keep a beat (and a few who couldn't) were invited to borrow a drum and participate. I think this looks like a really fun way to let off a little steam.

Hidden Gems of Cabbagetown

As the story goes, early Cabbagetown residents were working class Irish imigrants, many of whom lived below the poverty line. They lived in tiny Victorian row housing, such as The Wellesley Cottages, pictured above. The impoverished residents grew cabbages in their front yards, hence the namesake. Nowadays, these "poor" houses have been beautifully restored, and present residents have increased their space considerably by extensive rear additions that are not visible from the street. Digging in their backyards was a bit of a hazard, however, as bones often washed down from the adjacent St. James Cemetery. Now these and other Cabbagetown historic homes are only affordable to the very rich.

It is a bit of a "sketchy" neighbourhood we share with a homeless shelter down the block and numerous mental patients, addicts, x-cons & misfits living in the vicinity. I happened upon this character as I left work one night. I didn't stop to get his name.

Setting Sail

A tranquil moment in the Toronto harbour. There are several yacht clubs and marinas on Toronto Island. You don't have to be a member to enjoy the picturesque setting. Just hop an Island ferry to Ward's Island, and you'll be transported far away from the smog and bustle of city life. Just make sure you check the ferry schedule, so you don't miss the last boat back!

I was having coffee at a certain well known coffee chain early one morning, and the staff put out a sample tray of something called a mocha-raspberry-something-or-other. Not exactly what momma taught me about the components of a good breakfast. Even the sample sizes were way too gooey looking for me to want so early in the morning. Not surprisingly, after half an hour the sample drinks remained untouched, leading me to believe that the Toronto public has better judgement than to eat dessert for breakfast, no?

Goodbye Old House

After 21 years, our family says a fond farewell to #112...our old house. With a combination of excitement and horror, we watch as our old rickety house is demolished to make way for a brand new energy efficient model. Many of you commented on my last post wondering if demolition was necessary and couldn't it have been saved. I can only tell you, that this old house had so many problems that couldn't have been fixed simply. The foundation itself was crumbling, the workmanship on previous renovations was so shoddy, there was no point in renovating. Rest assured, the interior was completely picked appart...door knobs, stair railings, our front door, wooden trim, litterally everything including the kitchen sink has been recycled. I look forward to seeing our balcony French doors transplanted and enjoying a new life in the cottage of our dear friends. We have a lifetime of memories but now, enough sentimentality. We have so much ahead to look forward to. I will keep all you dear readers posted on new developments.

Wall mural

My darling daughter Beth created this mural along an entire wall of her bedroom when she was a 16 year old art student. I don't know how I agreed to allow her use black paint in what was once a pink and white eyelet room, but agree I did and the results were a fantastic example of adolescent self-expression. It took her weeks and weeks of painting freehand, usually late into the night to finish her project. Now it will be destroyed, along with other fixed features, as our house will be demolished tomorrow for us to rebuild a new one. This is one of the memories I will cherish.

Canada Day

July 1st is Canada's Birthday. 140 years young. Of course, there have been Native communities who have lived here a lot longer who many not share the enthusiasm of celebrating the founding of our nation. Nevertheless, Canada is a great place to live, and not just for our universal healthcare (no I haven't seen Sicko yet) We're a country rich in resources and are a welcome haven for people seeking a better life. We have one of the highest immigration rates and welcome people for all nations. Goodbye Sam

Sam The Record Man has been an institution in Toronto for as long as I can remember. His is a typical story of a humble immigrant rising to leadership and success from hard work and entrepreneurial genius. Sam's was more than just a chain of record stores. Sam Sniderman was a huge supporter of Canadian music and helped launch the careers of many talented artists. Now his chain of record stores has succumbed to the rapid advances of technology, and the flagship store, the one where I worked in the early 70's, is closing at the end of the month. I have so many memories of that place at Yonge and Gould. In my early teens, I spent many a Saturday afternoon browsing the stacks of records with my friends, and then when I was hired at the age of 17 to work in the Classical department on Sunday afternoons, well, I had the best job any music lover could have. There were many regulars who would come in to browse or purchase or just say hello. The late famous CBC broadcaster Clyde Gilmour was one of them. It's the passing of a Toronto landmark, and with sadness and fond memories, we say goodbye.

Bat Mitzvah

On Saturday night, I had the pleasure of attending the Bat Mitzvah of the daughter of a dear friend. Similar to a Bar Mitzvah, this is a coming of age ceremony when a Jewish girl is 12 or 13 and she is considered ready to publically lead the congregation in prayer. This one was a little different than others I have attended, as it was held out doors under a tent in the backyard, rather than in a place of worship. Guided by a guitar playing Rabbi, it was a very touching and spiritually moving event. Later, we all partied till the wee hours.

Birthday Party

My dear friend had a birthday party for her 6 year old twins last week. Actually, it was just for the little boy twin. The little girl twin had hers the week before. There were 40 little boys attending (many of their parents stayed too). It was a Harry Potter themed party, complete with haunted castle, HP themed games and prizes. I captured a brief moment when everything came to a halt and the wee ones halted their activity during dinner. I think I'm exhausted reliving it.

ROM Crystal

I went for a members' preview tour of the new Michael Lee-Chin Crystal, at the Royal Ontario Museum last week. It's an amazing structure. I've watched the construction for the past two years, and was very excited to view it from the inside. It's designed by the reknowned architect, Daniel Libeskind and is sure to attract lots of visitors, if not a bit of controversy. It's hard to judge a museum space when it's completely empty, as it was for this preview, but without a right angle in most of the rooms, I did feel a little disoriented. I will of course reserve my judgement until I can see it when the exhibits are installed.

As a chocolate lover, I am always on the lookout for chocolatiers who can indulge my passion. Imagine my delight when I discovered SOMA, just a 10 minute walk from my office. No, I haven't walked through a snowstorm yet to indulge my craving, but now that summer's here, I think I will become a regular at their Chocolate bar. Not only do they make their own chocolates using traditional methods, but they make an intoxicating and rich chocolate drink..served in demi-tasse cups. I couldn't help myself. My Front Door Organics delivery today inspired me to take this photo. Sorry all for the redundancy but I do think all those gorgeous fresh fruits & veggies deserve to be glorified. There's yet another leek, a cabbage, asparagus and all kinds of other lovely things that I have to decide what to do with. I'll certainly have my quota of B vitamins after this week. Any good recipes out there?

This gorgeous leek looked almost too good to eat. By the size and heft of it, you would think it had been "genetically engineered" but in fact, it is organic, and was included in the bounty I receive weekly from Front Door Organics, a Toronto organic food delivery company that I have used for the past 2 years. Not only do they deal in only Certified Organic produce and packaged goods, but they support local growers and farmers, so goods are trucked in from the area around Toronto whenever possible . By the way, the leek was delicious! I prepared it very simply by chopping off the dark green end and splitting it in half lengthwise and boiling in salted water with a pat of butter added. I found it delicious eaten warm or cold.

The market for non-surgical cosmetic enhancement has become so hot, that storefront practitioners are using aggressive marketing tactics to draw potential clients in off the streets. Judging by the age of the couple listening to the shpiel, I would doubt they are strong candidates for proceedures, although the prospect of manufactured beauty is a strong pull, even to the young who don't realize they already have it.

There is a very beautiful steel bridge on Toronto's Queen Street East that has this quotation...THIS RIVER I STEP IN IS NOT THE RIVER I STAND IN. This is really a piece of public art, designed by Eldon Garnet . As you can see, he's done a series of public works on the Queen Street East strip centered around the theme of TIME. Can you explain what the heck it means? The bridge does happen to cross the Don River, which is not one of Toronto's proudest features, but there is so much interest in redeveloping our waterfront, one can only hope it will be deserving of a bridge with such a lofty quote .

Wines of Italy

I had the good fortune (and good connections!) to attend a wine tasting last night given by The Stem Wine Group, Wine importers who specialize in Italian wines. We tasted mostly reds, such as a delicious Barolo, a Dromos from Maremma, an amazing Amarone and I confess, I don't remember the rest. I should have been spitting, but with wine this good, I couldn't let it go to waste!!

Cajun Corner

Isn't it fun when you stumble upon a great shop? I had no idea of it's exhistence until such a thing happened to me yesterday, when I discovered Cajun Corner, a shop devoted to all things Louisianan. If you like your hot sauce, this is the place to come. If you're having a Mardi Gras themed party, you'll find all your decorations here. There's a snack bar with a daily menu to die for- yesterday's special was a mouth watering Sausage and Red Bean Gumbo!. This is located on a hip little strip of Queen Street East (which is the " new" Queen Street West- the previously hip area of Toronto.

Royal Theatre

I don't know how it is where you come from, but it seems that small movie theatres have gone the way of the dodo bird, and nowadays are all owned by homogeneous big chains. Last night, I was pleasently surprised to see a big crowd turn out at Toronto's Royal Theatre on College Street to see a French thriller, The Page Turner. The real thrill for me was sitting in this theatre, one of the small handful of original theatres still left in tact in Toronto. There seems to be a subculture of people who love old theatres and there have been many neighbourhood protests over the years when they get closed down. I suppose they are no longer efficient to operate as businesses but still, some are historic and mean a lot to people who love them.

I would love to tell you all that this is my personal hat collection...but it is really just my fantasy. I am a total hat freak, and I wear one every day. I feel totally naked with out one. I don't have a particularly eclectic assortment. Nothing wacky or overly ornamental, but several good, classic models, most of them several years old, that I rotate so I don't get bored. This photo was taken at a Toronto milliner, Lilliput Hats, on College Street. A great place to go if you're ever in a blue mood.

Memories of Passover 2007

Last night I hosted a Passover Seder. It was a small group as Seders go...(6 including Elijah), as a large part of our family is away this year, but we nevertheless had a delicious ritual meal and enjoyed the retelling of the Passover story. This will be our last big dinner in this house, as we are set to demolish it (after 21 years there) in July. So, the customary toast "Next year in Jerusalem" became "Next year at 110" which will be the address of the new house we will be building.

Random acts of Urban Beautification

I've noticed quite a few of these "guerrilla" spray can attacks on public utility covers and backs of signage around town. The two examples shown in the photographs have been there for quite some time, so maybe the powers that be have decided to look the other way and let people enjoy them. They really do disguise some urban ugliness that you see everywhere.

Unpleasant day to be a Mannequin

Souvlaki on the Danforth

Another testament to Toronto's multi ethnic mix is the thriving community known as Greektown, along Danforth Avenue, just East of the downtown core. There are dozens of shops and restaurants where visitors to Toronto can taste some yummy Greek specialties such as Souvlaki or Baklava. Today was Greek Independance Day, and there was a parade on The Danforth, but it was too cold to stay and watch, so we took refuge in an authentic little souvlaki joint Astoria, pictured below, and had the most delicious chicken souvlaki on a pita.

The Sharp Centre for Design, at the Ontario College of Art and Design is a unique tabletop structure that has become one of Toronto's architectural landmarks. It was designed by British Architect Will Alsop and opened in 2004. OCAD, established in 1876, is the third largest of the approximately 40 professional art and design universities in North America.

Canary Grill Restaurant

The Canary Grill, 409 Front St. E. hasn't changed much in the 60 or so years since it's been around. It has the authentic charm of a by-gone era and the food is nothing fancy or trendy, but satisfying, greasy spoon fare. Eggs over easy and bottomless cup of coffee kind of place. Many of the folks who work in Toronto's booming film industry are Canary regulars, so you never know who you'll be rubbing shoulders with.

While the rest of Toronto was enjoying yesterday's mild weather, this little fellow was stuck behind bars for some "undisclosed" offence. His sad little face staring out at me from a shop window stopped me in my tracks, and I felt a moment of gratitude for my life of freedom. Although Toronto isn't thought of as the most glamorous city, there are many aspects of my life here which I cherish....as long as I can stay out of trouble.

Hughs's Room

Hugh's Room in Toronto's west end, is an accoustic music institution. You can have a simple meal in the dining room and watch some of the greatest folk and roots music around. They showcase young up-and-comers as well as music industry veterans. Tonight, I had the good fortune to watch Kathryn Rose, an amazing singer-songwriter with the voice of an angel. She writes the most achingly beautiful and ironic lyrics. She was part of the Bluebird North showcase, which promotes Canadian songwriters.

It's located at 18 Baldwin Street, a charming street just off Chinatown and around the corner from the Art Gallery. They have a great selection of used LP's and CDs that will take you on a journey down memory lane. Helpful owners that love to reminisce on the oldies.

Yesterday, I had the good fortune to attend a free lunch hour chamber music recital at Toronto's spanking new Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts. The rectial was given by students of the Glenn Gould School of the Royal Conservatory.The hilight of the afternoon was the Schubert Quintet in A major "The Trout". Music lovers will agree that this is a most sublime piece and it was performed with such sensitivity and maturity. I must also boast that my brilliant son was the pianist.

No, I'm not insulting the online community...The Real Jerk is a great little Jamaican restaurant in Toronto's east end. Another example of the multicultural tapestry that makes Toronto so unique. They serve real jerk chicken as well as roti, and prices are great too. They even have their own cookbook.

Do you think I might have a "thing" for Indian food? This is the kind of hole-in-the-wall that foodies and travellers dream about. The kind of place that really only the "insiders" know about...until now!! Not much atmosphere...the building is right on top of a gas station just east of Toronto's downtown core, but there is an amazing selection of freshly prepared Indian dishes, huge portions and reasonable prices. A must if you're ever visiting Toronto and need an Indian food fix.

Independant Bookseller

This Ain't the Rosedale Library is one of the few remaining independant booksellers in Toronto, and a true throwback to an era before globalization ruled the world. Visiting this narrow store is like visiting a friend who always has interesting books lying all around in a controlled clutter. It is harder and harder for these small operators to compete with the big box chain stores, yet I often find a level of customer service that the big stores just don't offer.

Sentinel at the Door

This handsome fellow was left abandoned in the garbage at the end of our street. I rescued him and gave him a job to do, guarding our garden shed. So far, there have been no break-ins. I have tried to coax a smile from his face, but he just gazes off into the distance, perhaps pining for his callous previous owner. I haven't given him a name yet. Any suggestions?

This photo was taken outside of Toronto's Old City Hall, which happens to be right across the street from Toronto's New City Hall. The building now houses the Ontario provincial courts. The flags in the picture represent the 10 provinces and 2 territories that make up Canada. I liked the look of the strong primary colours against the monochromatic background.
